Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and share information when you use Fadeo, our app and website (together, “Fadeo” or the “Service”). It is part of how we run a public, ephemeral social product where the words you post fade into a small emoji artifact after a time you choose.

Fadeo is operated by Yung-An Fang, under the name Openmouse Studio (“Openmouse Studio”, “we”, “us”, or “our”), the party responsible for your information (the data controller). You can reach us at hello@openmouse.co. This Policy works alongside our Terms of Service.

The short version

Fadeo is public by design. Your posts, replies, handle, display name, and bio can be seen by anyone, including people who are not signed in.
Fading is a privacy feature. After a post fades, its original text leaves public view. You, the creator, keep your own copy.
We do not sell your data, show you ads, or track you across other apps and websites. There is no App Tracking Transparency prompt because we do not do that kind of tracking.
We use a small set of service providers to run Fadeo: Apple (sign-in and notifications), Google Firebase (our backend), plus analytics and website-form providers. The emoji are generated on your device.
You can delete your account and its data from inside the app at any time.

Who can use Fadeo

You must be at least 16 years old to use Fadeo, as described in our Terms of Service. Fadeo is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Information we collect

Information you give us

Account information. Fadeo uses Sign in with Apple. The first time you sign in, Apple provides a unique identifier and, if you choose to share them, your name and an email address (a private relay address if you use Apple’s Hide My Email). On later sign-ins, Apple typically provides only the identifier.
Profile information. Your handle, display name, short bio, and language preference.
Content. The posts and replies you write (their text and timestamps), the reactions you give, and who you follow.
Safety information. When you report a post, reply, or user, we store the report, the reason, and a snapshot of the reported content at the time of the report. When you block someone, we store that relationship.

Information collected automatically

Device and app identifiers needed to run the Service, including a push notification token and an installation identifier used to deliver notifications, and a device attestation token (Firebase App Check using Apple’s App Attest service) used to confirm requests come from a genuine copy of the app.
Network and technical logs. To operate and secure the Service, our providers (Firebase Authentication, Hosting, and Cloud Functions) process technical information such as IP address, user-agent and app version, request timestamps, identifiers, and security or error records.
Usage analytics. We use third-party analytics providers to understand how Fadeo is used so we can improve it. We do not configure these tools with your Fadeo account identifier, name, or email. They rely on pseudonymous app or device identifiers, and may include device, app, approximate-location, and interaction information. We rely on our legitimate interest in understanding and improving Fadeo, and you can turn analytics off at any time in the app’s settings (see “Your choices and rights”).

Generated on your device

The reaction emoji and the fade emoji are generated on your device (including with Apple’s on-device models, with a deterministic on-device fallback). Your post text is not sent to any third-party AI service to create them.

On our website

Our website uses cookieless analytics for aggregate measurement and a third-party form provider for our waitlist form. When you submit the form, we receive the email you enter. We operate the website without tracking cookies; if that ever changes, we will say so on the site and obtain consent where the law requires it.

How we use your information

We use the information above to:

provide and operate Fadeo, including publishing your posts and replies and running the fade mechanic;
show public content, counts, and the emoji artifacts the way Fadeo is designed to work;
send the notifications you have enabled (reactions, replies, new followers);
keep Fadeo safe: handle reports, blocks, automatic hiding, and abuse prevention;
understand and improve the Service through analytics; and
comply with law and enforce our Terms.

If you are in a region whose law (such as the EEA or UK GDPR) requires a legal basis, we rely on: performance of our contract with you (to provide the Service), our legitimate interests (to keep Fadeo safe and to improve it, including analytics), your consent (where we ask for it), and compliance with legal obligations.

How information is shared

Your public content (posts, replies, handle, display name, bio, reaction and reply counts, and emoji artifacts) is visible to anyone, by design.

To run Fadeo, we share information with a small number of platform and service providers, described here by category and purpose:

Platform and infrastructure — Apple (Sign in with Apple and push notification delivery, under Apple’s own terms) and Google Firebase (hosting, authentication, database, push messaging, and abuse protection, as our processor; see Firebase’s subprocessor list).
Analytics providers — to understand and improve the Service, on the pseudonymous basis described above.
Form provider — to run our website waitlist form and receive the email you submit.

We require service providers that process information on our behalf to protect it consistently with this Policy and applicable law. We may add or change providers over time; the specific data types collected by the app are also reflected in the App Store privacy information.

To deliver a notification, your device’s push token and the notification content (which can include the sender’s display name and a short preview of a reply) are sent through Apple’s and Google’s push services.

We do not sell your personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not permit processors acting on our behalf to use your information for their own purposes. We may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of Fadeo, our users, or the public.

The fade mechanic, public content, and what is kept

While a post is live, its text and replies are public. Once it fades, the original text leaves public view and is replaced for the public by the emoji artifact; the public also sees the reaction and reply counts.
After a post fades, the app stops showing its text and replies to the public and continues to show them to you, the post’s creator (a reply may be gone if its author deleted it or it was removed).
Because public content can be seen and saved by others while it is live (for example, by screenshot), we cannot guarantee that no copy exists anywhere after content leaves public view.

How long we keep information

Account and profile information, and your content are kept while your account exists. Faded post text remains available to you, the creator, as described above.
Safety and moderation records, including reports and the snapshot of reported content, are kept while they are reasonably needed for an active safety matter, to prevent repeat abuse, or to meet a legal obligation. We review these records periodically and delete them when they are no longer needed.
Push notification tokens are invalidated when you sign out, and removed from our records when they are detected as stale or when you delete your account.
Backups are overwritten on a rolling basis; residual copies are removed within a limited period, which can take up to 180 days.
Analytics data is retained for the period we configure with our analytics providers, and is not configured with your account identifier.
Waitlist emails collected through our website form are kept until we send the launch announcement, then deleted within 30 days, or sooner if you ask us to remove you.

When you delete your account from inside the app, we delete your account and the content tied to it from our live systems. Some limited information may remain: safety and moderation records (kept while reasonably needed, as above), and notifications already delivered to other people (which stay in the recipient’s inbox while that record exists). Copies in our providers’ backups are removed on the rolling basis above, which can take up to 180 days.

Your choices and rights

Access, edit, and delete. You can edit your profile in the app, and you can delete your account and its data from inside the app at any time.
Notifications. You control push notifications in the app and in your device settings.
Safety controls. You can block and report other users.
Analytics. You can turn analytics off at any time in Settings → Preferences → Usage data, which stops further collection. Because the analytics is not linked to your account, we cannot single out and delete past analytics data about you specifically.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights:

EEA / UK (GDPR): the rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing, to withdraw consent where we rely on it, to data portability (where processing is based on your consent or our contract and carried out by automated means), and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. California (CCPA/CPRA), where it applies: the rights to know, delete, and correct your personal information, and to opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
Taiwan (PDPA): the rights to inquire about and review your personal information, to request a copy, to supplement or correct it, to request deletion, and to ask us to stop collecting, processing, or using it. The Apple sign-in identifier, your handle, and your display name are required to create an account; other profile details and content are optional unless you choose to use the relevant feature. You also choose whether to turn on notifications.

International data processing

We are based in Taiwan, and our service providers (including Google Firebase and our analytics and form providers) may process and store information on servers in the United States and other countries. Where information is transferred out of the EEA or the UK, the applicable provider terms use recognized safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK Addendum; contact us at hello@openmouse.co for more information or a copy. Security

We use the security features of our providers, including authentication, server-side access rules, and device attestation, to protect your information. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children

Fadeo is for people aged 16 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child under 16 has given us personal information, contact us at hello@openmouse.co and we will remove it.

Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. When we make a material change, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, give you notice in the app. Where a change requires your consent, we will ask for it before the change applies to you.

Change of control

If Fadeo is involved in a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of all or substantially all of its assets, your information may be transferred to the successor as part of that transaction. The successor will continue to be bound by this Policy, or will give you notice before your information becomes subject to a different policy.
